4th std 2nd language English 1st poem Household articles (The clock of life) The clock of life is wound but once, And no man has the power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour To lose one’s wealth is sad indeed, To lose one’s health is more, To lose one’s soul is such a loss That no man can restore. Today only is our own. So live, love and toil with a will. For the clock may soon be still. - Robert H. Smith

6th std 2nd language English 2nd poem All things bright and beautiful All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful: The Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings. The rich man in his castle, The poor man at his gate, He made them, high or lowly, And ordered their estate. The purple headed mountains, The river running by, The sunset and the morning That brightens up the sky. The cold wind in the winter, The pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden, He made them every one. The tall trees in the greenwood, The meadows where we play, The rushes by the water, To gather every day. He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well. - Cecil Frances Alexander

7th std 2nd language English 1st poem The gymnastic clock The little clock is friends with me, It talks as plain as plain can be, And says, each morning as it rises, “Now, don’t forget your exercises! Both hands above your head, you know! Then lower them very slowly, so; Oh! don’t get tired and stop, that way! I exercise like this, all day!” Right in its face then, I say, “Pooh! I wouldn’t boast of it, like you, But I can swing my arms round, too!” And so the clock then looks at me, And I look back, and I and he Each single morning, when we rise, Just exercise and exercise! - M. C. Davies

5th std 2nd language English 6th poem Results and roses The man who wants a garden fair, Or small or very big, With flowers growing here and there, Must bend his back and dig. The things are mighty few on earth That wishes can attain. Whate’er we want of any worth We’ve got to work to gain. It matters not what goal you seek Its secret here reposes: You’ve got to dig from week to week To get Results or Roses. - Edgar A. Guest

5th std 2nf language English 5th poem The Cow The friendly cow all red and white, I love with all my heart; She gives me cream with all her might, To eat with apple-tart. She wanders lowing here and there, And yet she cannot stray, All in the pleasant open air, The pleasant light of day. And blown by all the winds that pass And wet with all the showers, She walks among the meadow grass And eats the meadow flowers. - Robert Louis Stevenson
